Sneak Preview of new Apex SQL Doc

We're going to try and get thenew Apex SQL Doc up on Tuesday. Delay right now is the Help File which has turned into a near total re-write and yours truly get's stuck writing it. anyway - looks like the wait will be worth it.

(for all new screen shots pls check out the product page - they will be updated shortly)

We've totally updated the UI adding a graphical treeview which I think makes using this app 1000% easier (not mention cooler).

This version has more accurrate dependency analysis, faster processing, a ton of minor defect fixes etc

some features I wanted was to be able to suppress empty sections (in the documentation pages) and empty nodes (for example if there are no Functions). This results in a much cleaner output - but for people who require exact same structure we let them be an option.

We replaced "profiles" with full fledged projects - allowing users to create New, Edit last saved or pull a project from file. This paradigm has been a great success in other apps. and I think it works well here.

We've totally updated the way individual objects are selected. We have a two tiered filter. You can first select the Object Types you want and then drill down to the specific Individual Objects via RegEx filter.

Options haven't changed that much but due to popular demand we added Custome HEADER and FOOTER text sections. We'll find a way to get images in there soon.

Although this is a pretty huge upgrade we're still working to add quite a bit to the product. CLI will get a ton more switches and we hope to add VS2005 style soon. We're looking at HTML 2.0 as well.

If you have feature requests pls post them on the forum and I'll take a look at them.

Sneak Peak at new Apex SQL Doc

We have a new version of Apex SQL Doc, out database documentation tool, that should be released any day now.

This version has some important new features/improvements.

We have redesigned the User Interface to add out Treeview Wizard paradigm to allow visual walking through the documentation steps.

We have also added the ability to view dependencies graphically in the documentation itself. More details can be seen at this link Integrating Graphical Dependency View into Apex SQL Doc .

This is an important step because it is a precursor to adding real database diagrams to the documentation. We've opted to create our own (based on the relationships in the object definitions) vs using diagrams in SQL Server EM and trying to document them.

We've introduced some smaller features and a variety of fixes to the app. and the documentation.

We have a pretty aggressive feature release schedule for Apex SQL Doc including adding a new output style - VS2005, DTS documentation (an oft requested feature) and are current researching HTML 2.0 documentation.

We plan to increase the price of this product pretty soon. An Apex SQL Blogger's insider's tip would be that if you were thinking of buying Apex SQL Doc to buy before May 1st

This images shows the new Treeview Navigator along with SQL Server 2005 object selector

Individual object selector. This documentation project is for several dbs so the datatypes are grouped

Integrating Graphical Dependency View into Apex SQL Doc

With the immediate upcoming feature release for Apex SQL Doc we plan some cool new features

One of them is integrating images of Dependency Hierarchy in the documentation itself as illustrated in the screen shot. A user can click on the thumbnail and get the whole visual. CHM makes this work well since scrollbars appear automatically if the image is too big. To accomplish this we have used the dependency viewer from Apex SQL Clean which provides the functionality more interactively.

We plan to show Parents and Children only and probably Hierarchical view only at first but then offer more options.

In addition to this the Apex SQL Doc Wizard interface is getting an entire overhaul to allow users to graphically navigate via a treeview control. We plan to continue to layer on SQL 2005 support to document more attributes. We have dependency algorithm and overall performance improvements as well. This release should come out in early May.

Longer term (i.e. 90 days) we're looking at adding VS2005 style help file output and also support for compiling to HTML 2.0 and if Ashton can get his grind on, support for adding diagram images IN the documentation as well.

If you have feature requests please post them on the support forum. Any and all requests will be evaluated for inclusion in next major feature release.
