Sync Direction - the Danielski Method

We've made synchronization more explicit with ApexSQL Diff 2005 (unreleased). Thx to Mike Danielski for pushing this feature request.

The image shows the first step in our new synchronization wizard where user has an opportunity to view the synchronization direction with short name "Source" and "Destination" as well as explicit Server and Database name.

We've gone ahead and automatically abbreviated the Server name, which I find "noisy", in cases where server is the same. When it isn't the same server is specified explicitly.

If you are like Mike and sync first and ask questions later - we have an option to automatically back up db prior to running script and roll back to it if sync script generates any errors

We've made some adjustments on the main screen too. Including a visual indicator of last saved sync direction in the middle panel of status bar (at bottom of form). And we've eliminated the direction arrows > and < which were the same icons as "In Source Only" and "In Destination Only" used for filtering compared objects

The direction is no longer controlled on UI (as a universal setting) but is now made an attribute of each sync (and can be stored in a project)

Note: ApexSQL Diff will be a FREE Upgrade for all current ApexSQL Diff users. (I never get tired of saying that!)

Data comparison in ApexSQL Diff 2005

I've been going over some of the specifics regarding data comparison in the forthcoming ApexSQL Diff 2005 for the purposes of generating FAQs and generally educating myself. Here are a few basic concepts and explanations of the new paradigm:

  1. What does Apex SQL Diff look for when comparing two tables in terms of similarity?

ApexSQL 2005 will contain the powerful new feature of being able to compare the data contained only in certain columns. A user may choose to only compare some or even only one of a table’s columns, and then perform a sync accordingly. Because of this feature, tables to be compared now only require that any one of the columns contained in each table are identically named and have the same or a comparable datatype. Additionally, the two tables must be named identically, even in case.

  2. Once it has identified two tables (or subsets of two tables) that can be compared – what does it look for in terms of comparison key?

The app first looks for a primary key on the table – if one exists, this will be the key used to drive the data comparison. In the absence of a PK, the app will look for any unique field or index constriant as a data comparison key. While the constraint need not have the same name between the tables, it should be defined across the same columns and in the same order, and it should be unique. If there are multiple available, the user will be prompted to choose from thse available and appropriate.

  3. What happens if there is no key at all?

In the absence of a PK or unique constraint on a field or index, the app will attempt to generate a comparison key itself using all of the fields selected for the data comparison. The resulting key need not be unique for comparison to proceed, thus allowing for greater flexibility in the use of the data comparison feature.

  4. What are the different categories of incomparable tables?

The converse of the answer to the first question, tables that cannot be compared are those that are not identically named or do not share at least one identically named column of comparable datatype. Details on these tables will still be available via the application grid.

With all of the upcoming releases we have planned there will be a lot more to report. Please stay tuned, and if there are any specific requests for detailed functional specifications please contact me directly at mailto:support@apexsql.com.

Apex SQL Diff 2005 beta screen shots (Structure)

This is part II of Apex SQL Diff 2005 screen shots

The first image shows new SQL Diff Structure UI. differences can now be viewed in a powerful component in the interface itself. We will keep ability to shell out to 3rd party diff viewers.

Toolbar has been streamlined. A lot of the complexity has been transferred to a new project wizard which now incorporates most settings that were previously in options form.

The second image shows a step in the new Project wizard with a powerful regular expression object filter to limit objects compared via GUI. the resulting filtered items can be imported/exported. The filter exports can be imported back into the wizard for another project and/or used in Command Line Interface

The next image shows compound owner mapping. A much requested feature.

The final wizard shows a step of the Synchronization wizard with some new options including back up and dependant objects. The latter will be processed with a new dependency parser

Any change in synchronization or comparison attributes will be saved to the project, which can be "fed" whole into the CLI.

Apex SQL Diff 2005 beta screen shots (Data)

Here are some new shots to new ApexSQL Diff 2005 beta - Data module

This first image shows new Data comparison wizard where user can selects columns to compare, add a filter to compare subset of data only, view comparison key. A tab of incomparable tables is also shown.

Both comparison and synchronization are now powered by a wizard that can save, edit and open .xml based projects. These projects can be built with UI and then passed to Command Line Interface and run unattended.

This next image shows re-worked Data Diff interface with a split pane view showing data comparison results at the bottom and column level filters.

The final images shows the synchronization wizard with some pretty cool new options. We'll be adding .exe and .Net project to output options soon after first release of Apex SQL Diff 2005
