Labels: ApexSQL Code ...Beta Update Alert - ApexSQL Code 2008.01 We're offering a pre-release of ApexSQL Code 2008 Beta. This is a pretty major new release. It can be downloaded here The release notes are here WHAT IS NEW? Projects The biggest change is Template Projects. These projects contain a group of templates that can be executed at once. For example, a Project of documentation templates. The project can be pointed to a database and unique templates to document a table, a function etc will be run. In our template library we use projects to script out objects in a database as well. We have some other examples of them. More templates We've included a lot more templates - for example auditing, documentation, scripting and NHibernate. We have plans to make a much larger library and will be posting an online version of it soon. Usability Improvements We've totally changed the UI in an attempt to make it more user friendly. The paradigm of picking a schema and running a template against it has been reversed. Now you pick a template and run it against a set of schema objects. We've tried to streamline file writing and make the options (single file, multi file easier). New Features We added a lot of features like tab colorization, new members to existing objects, Improved custom properties, template parser and more KNOWN ISSUES / CLARIFICATIONS Properties aren't shown for projects in the property menu. So you can't change the name or set some other options. This will be fixed ASAP. Child objects (i.e. columns) aren't shown by default and it's hard to find out how to turn them back on. Toggle this button in schema explorer ![]() You can RUN or TEST a template. If you RUN it the schema explore will allow you to check multiple objects. If you TEST it you can *select* only one. Backward compatibility - our goal is 100% backward compatibility w/ 2005.13 for final release. In this beta it's broken in a few places. If you template won't compile send it to us a support@apexsql.com and we'll update it. The help file isn't updated. I'm working on it! It should be ready soon. This app. hasn't been tested much - expect bugs. We'll put this throught the ringer before the official release though. ROADMAP We plan another beta release next week that should be feature complete. Another after this that should be a bug fix release. With each new release we plan to add more templates. In approx 3 weeks we'll post our Online Template Library for template posting and sharing. We'll announce new versions of Beta on News blog and the Support Forum. COMMUNITY APPRECIATION Anyone who posts meaningful feedback on our forum (beta testing, bugs, comments, suggestions etc) get's a free copy of the product. If you post templates we'll offer a free version as well as probably other things, including ApexSQL Gear. I'd love to run some contests for cash and other prizes once the Template Library is up. Labels: ApexSQL Code ...Sneak Peak at the new ApexSQL Code (.NET Templates etc) We've been working on the new ApexSQL Code with primary emphasis of converting the template engine to .NET. Along the way we've added a lot of other features. We're striving to get this released by end of the year (Dec '06) but it may spill over into the new year. A beta version is available upon request Click Here for a Functional Overview of the next ApexSQL Code Labels: ApexSQL Code ...Interview with a Vladpire Quick interview with Vlad Panteleyev, ApexSQL Code lead developer. Vlad is a coder, not a talker, but I grabbed some time from him on the eve of a major new release of ApexSQL Code to ask him some questions. ![]() How long have you been working as primary author of ApexSQL Code? I've been working as primary author of ApexSQL Code about 8 months. ![]() What strengths, as a developer, do you bring to this application? I think that I have helped ApexSQL Code to become more stable and more user friendly ![]() What changes have you seen/helped to implement since you began on the application? The most change is GUI : MDI, docking panels, property pages. Template Editor has been improved also: better syntax highlighting, better IntelliPrompt, better syntax error handling. I hope that users will really like the new Custom Properties ![]() Note: There is a training video on custom properties posted here What do you like most about ApexSQL Code in terms of it's feature set? I really like the simplicity and power of processing multiple schema objects in a batch ![]() What are the things you feel need to be improved the most (missing features, or existing features that need to be improved)? The main thing to be improved is porting ApexSQL Code generation engine to CodeDOM-based one (.NET templates). This will allow users to write templates using more up-to-date programming languages such as C#, VB.NET. Debugging or tracing may help users to design the templates. Implementing debugging is a sophisticated task and long-term item, but tracing should be added in the short term. Another thing is better support of datatype mapping for output languages. ![]() What unique advantages does ApexSQL Code have over other code generation tools? To my mind ApexSQL Code is more streamlined for SQL Server users and easier to use than similar tools from other vendors. ![]() What is the timeframe and major features planned for the next major release? I plan to release a new version of ApexSQL Code at the beginning of September. New ApexSQL Code will have new code generation engine, new templates wrtitten on C# and VB.NET. Some changes will affect the Object Model. ![]() Vlad, thanks much for your time! When I wrote it my son was 3 mos. old - now he's almost 8! And this version is the best ever. The beta has been out for a bit (see support forum for link) - and the final release will be available probably next week. I will be throwing some blog posts up on a last sneak peak of the features in this final phase Some cool new productivity enhancing features you might miss if you weren't noticing Thanks to MikeD for these cool requests - that we put into action 1) ApexSQL Code will open templates on load that were opened when app. was closed. (you must turn setting in Options "Open Last" on) 2) Ability to Close All and Close all except current from Context menu of tab 3) Ability to show tabs on the top of the form. Wrap text as new Code Block - this one I've wanted for a long time. Select code and you can wrap it with tags to treat it as template code. or just add a New block. This saves me trying to find those crazy code brackets. { and } The app. is much more .NET centric - we have a whole new option form for mapping SQL to .NET/CLR datatypes ![]() Check out the new Schema Explorer. Click Here for more info. Labels: ApexSQL Code ...Apex SQL Code - Past, Present and Future Apex SQL Code is on the march again after a long period of ... modest innovation. Apex SQL Code was my first software product back in the days when I was contracting/consulting. I designed it (a far cry from current product though) literally overnight and brought it to work to demo to client, BankBoston. The next day it was dubbed "Proc-Blaster" for the ability to blast out large numbers of stored procedures. Interestingly, BankBoston is gone (eaten up by Fleet Bank) but Apex SQL Code lives. The Bank had budgeted 6 weeks to write insert, update and delete procs for 300 tables to fit our object model design. I burned thru the job in approx. 46 seconds. I was never one to milk a contract! I fooled around with it for a couple days on the company's dime and then offered to buy it back by removing 3 days of work from my timecard. (some days I wish I could get that deal back!). I then continued to work on it nights and weekends for the remainder of the year. By year's end I had added some polish to it and was selling (if you can call it that) it on my website. This was 1999. Back then you either bought a shareware tool or rolled your tool (I chose the latter for most of my needs). There wasn't the 3rd party tools market that their is today. I managed to move enough units to encourage me to keep working on it as well as add other utilities to my offerings. Frustrated with the inability to really control/manipulate the output beyond making Insert, Update and Create procs with simple customizable options I started adding "tags" that were swapped out with run-time variables during processing. These tags became so complex, including even such things as primitive constructs (IF/THEN and even CASE), that I anointed it with a name "TScript" for "Template Script". The pseudo language was fun but I believe I was the only person on the planet who could actually create a "TScript" template. It was horribly complex as I basically had to write my own parsing/scripting engine and took a huge amount of effort implement scripting features that were primitive even by BASIC standards. Thanks to a power-user, Brandon McPherson, though I was introduced to the Microsoft Script Parser and figured out a way to write templates in a real scripting language like VBScript and JScript using real functions, properties etc. This unleashed an awesome amount of power - for example you could instantiate COM objects from within a template like the File System Object and I had to do a lot less programmatically to accomplish a lot more. Ivan Erceg developed the "intellisense" in the product. Primitive by today's standards (it is getting improved now!) but back in the day it was pretty cool This was an interesting branch for the product. I still had the legacy of essentially hard coded patterns that I supported. For example you could point to a table and select "Generate Procedures" and the tool would just do it. The user wasn't required to customize anything. This product still exists - you can find it here. But the customizable, programmable templates was where the action was from my opinion. As I got more into sql tools and the complexity level increased, Apex SQL Code, got less attention than it should have - although personally, it was always my favorite product. We ported the interface to Microsoft Standard (customizable toolbars), rewrote it in .NET but it remained (and remains today) essentially the same product that it had been for several years. You can note it still is very VB6 centric in options forms etc. But that was then and this is now. We've finally freed up the cycles to devote some time to Apex SQL Code - giving it a Command Line Interface and totally reworking the User Interface, which should roll out shortly. We plan a port of Script Engine to .NET to allow templates to be written in C# and VB.NET (this is done now as a technical prototype) and we are adding intellisense on the same level as Apex SQL Edit (we're working with Ashton on some killer next gen intellisense features based on some technology that should become available in a few weeks - I'd say more but I don't want to steal Ashton's thunder). Our Poor Man's Roadmap is 1) Totally Redesigned UI - early May 2) Killer Intellisense - July 3) .NET templates - August/Sept 4) Advanced features - Nested templates, Template Projects, VS2005/ApexSQL Edit Integration, etc - Sept and beyond The following is a series of shots we cut out of development. This is basically what the next major version will look like. It should roll in a few weeks. Labels: ApexSQL Code ...A BLAST from the Past During the process of completing ApexSQL Code 2005 (should be up today), I recently uncovered some old images of it's prior incarnation - LockwoodTech Proc-Blaster - the tool that Blasts Procs, just as the name suggests. Caution: Some of the screen shots come with a "T for Teen" Rating Before our code generation tool was ApexSQL Code, it was LockwoodTech Proc-Blaster, the first software tool I ever created. Since then a lot has changed - we've added a bunch of new features, totally re-wrote the UI to support MSFT standard interfaces and finally re-wrote it again in C# with a CLI and SQL 2005 support to boot! ApexSQL Code has a new author as I have retired my no-finger coding gloves (at least temporarily). We are in the process of planning another near total rewrite with a ton of new features - including cross db support, better intellisense, snippets and much more. But sadly, some cool things dropped off as well - like our awesome SKINZ which I was forced by popular demand to drop and some of the radical images in the product - like our Space Marine who underscored the blast aspect of the product. Before these images are destroyed forever I thought I'd throw a few of them up on the BLOG for posterities sake.As the images show, the skins included irregular form shapes (note the "fin" on bottom right), pulsing buttons and a toolbar that inverted colors on mouseover. ![]() Get your developers the tools they need to do the job fast and right - ApexSQL Develper Studio is the ultimate combat multiplier for SQL Developers. 7 Best of Class tools - one download, install and discounted price.
